Animation has come a long way from when it started. Back then, it was widely used in films, games and music videos, but now many industries are taking advantage and view it as a marketing tool.

However the process of animating is not an easy one. To ensure your brand’s message is a success, we share the typical process an animation company would do.

The Animation Production Process

Research is the initial part before any work can be done - client’s cooperation is essential in this step.

Research is the initial part before any work can be done – client’s cooperation is essential in this step.

1) Researches

To begin on the project, the team needs to learn and understand the client’s brand, product, services, vision, goals, etc.. Usually this would be the client’s responsibilities but the team would follow up with additional questions to help go in depth.

The market’s demand is also important and again, this is either done by the team or client beforehand. With all the questions complete, each member can move on to the next part.

Brainstorming together - any ideas can be made possible thanks to animation.

2)  Brainstorming

This part is very fun! The team is aware of the concept, deadline, product and all aspects of the project.

Coming together, each member would share their ideas – no matter how outrageous or crazy it is, it can work thanks to animation! Any information from the client would be useful references so it doesn’t miss the mark of the message.

Storyboard helps clients see the direction the animation would take.

3) Storyboard

Think of a storyboard similar to a draft. It’s used to explain the story, shows the main elements of the animation and gives an idea of how the voiceover would match with the visual part.

Since animation is a lengthy process, a storyboard helps the clients to see and understand the process, avoiding any delays in the future.

This stage helps to determine the style of the animation.

3) Designing

Now that we’re on board; it’s time for the animators to do their magic. So many design styles in mind, it’s important to choose one that is unique to a particular project and brand. Clients can assist by providing their preferred design style and concept.

This process is very tedious but rewarding. The designers will cooperate with the motion designers and many details are put into the work.

However once several examples have been done – it doesn’t stop there! The client will make their design choices, some might even add comments of improvements.

4) Voice over

A script has already been prepared, it’s time to voice for your animation.

Some studios would provide you with a talent of voiceover artists while some require to be outsourced. Narrators are crucial as they help to set the tone for the video. An actor must be able to deliver the script in a style that represents your brand.

This step is very complex and time consuming and requires 3 key factor to ensure its success.

5) Animation

The previous steps help to prepare for this very big process. This is a technical process and involves tools, programs and processes.

The most complex of any task there are 3 major key things to bear in mind in order to ensure it’s a success.

  • Natural movement. Character and object movements determine the quality of the animation. It should be fluid and smooth.
  • Seamless transition. Each scene should smoothly transition from one another, different animators might employ different tricks and techniques but the goal is the same = a seamless transition.
  • Lighting. This element is important as it sets the mood for the animation, which objects are in and out of focus, and much more. While this may not be necessary for commercial animated ads, it is important to get this correctly.

Voice narration, sound effect and music - these are crucial to set the tone of the animation.

6) Sound Effect

The stunning visuals are in place, it’s only fair to add all the necessary sound effects and music.

This process requires the animators to edit and synchronise the voiceover recording, sound effects and music with the visual. And just like any other process, it is crucial as it sets the tone for the entire animation, messages, and brand.

Clients feedbacks are essential for any improvements - if all is well, it’s ready for the project.

7) Revisions

Once all is set is done, the team will send the finished project to the client for any feedback and revisions.

Corrections and improvements will be made based on the client’s comments. It will be sent for any other feedback and if all is good – it’s ready to be used in your marketing project!

The animation process is very complex and we hope this article has given a glimpse of what we do behind the scene.
